MAKING HER WAY
In “Making her Way”, we see an allegory of a woman seeking her path and creating her own story. She is knitting a scarf, working with her own hands on something seemingly domestic and utilitarian, even mundane. However, it is in the small moments of creativity and traditional knowledge of making and working with hands that a force of creation is living. Using this power, we can create a wonderful tapestry of life, and a journey worthy of a legend. The woman seems to be looking back, knowing her past and perhaps turning around to listen to the noise of the forest. The forest hides mysteries and holds wisdom, known in many fairy tales and folklore. This particular imagery pulls inspiration from Hungarian folklore, and her costume is evocative of Eastern Europe and Balkan traditions. This piece was produced during a two month long residency that the artist did in 2021, at Dickinson’s Reach in Maine. Birch forests and handmade objects from the local environment were a huge inspiration for the creation of the piece.
