HANDFUL
In “Handful” we see a woman, dressed in traditionally Indian garments, working on many chores and creative activities at the same time. She is carrying water, holding her hand in the position of a “mudra” and drawing henna on her own arms. She is a human multitasker, like many of us, but at the same time there is a serenity to her. The multitude of hands depicted here are intentional – evoking the numerous Indian deities depicted in similar ways. There is something sacred to ordinary life and our efforts within it to remain connected to the transcendental. The painting contains designs evocative of “mandalas” and is highly detailed and decorated in respect to traditional esthetics of India. It took six months to finish all the details in the design, and many hours of inking to replicate the henna patterns. Although the designs are inspired by Eastern spirituality and tradition, the painting speaks to the universal spiritual efforts known in many esoteric schools.
